How can complexity be reduced? Perhaps fifteen minutes could become the new smallest unit, then 24 times 15 equals 96, which is divisible by 6 (and 6 might be the most complex shape that can be perceived quickly). So 4 units is one old hour. To be continued.
p.s. Minutes and seconds should probably not intersect, it is just visually annoying, they could be aligned so that bigger unit is on top.
